MMDAs urged to integrate GrEEn project into development plans

Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been urged to incorporate the objectives of the Boosting Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities in Ghana (GrEEn) Project into their development plans to promote sustainable livelihoods and green jobs.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, said effective implementation of the four-year project would help build resilient local economies capable of responding to climate change and emerging global opportunities.

His remarks were delivered on his behalf during an end-of-year review and validation meeting of the 2022 work plans of beneficiary MMDAs under the GrEEn Project.

The meeting brought together metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives, coordinating directors, and planning, budget and finance officers.

The GrEEn Project is a joint initiative of the European Union, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana, the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and SNV. It is being implemented in selected districts in the Ashanti and Western regions.

The project aims to improve employability and entrepreneurship by linking beneficiaries to market opportunities while promoting green and climate-resilient local economies.

Mr Osei-Mensah said the Regional Coordinating Council would continue to support skills development initiatives to enable beneficiaries, particularly women, youth and returning migrants, to establish sustainable green businesses.

The Community Development Officer of the UNCDF, Nathan Asamoah, said the project supports the growth of local economies through performance-based climate-resilient grants for infrastructure such as clean water systems, integrated water management facilities, climate-resilient bridges and culverts.

He added that the project also creates temporary employment opportunities for beneficiaries through Cash-for-Work programmes.

Representatives from participating assemblies, including Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipal Assembly, Adansi South District Assembly, Offinso North District Assembly and Sekyere Afram Plains District Assembly, presented updates on the implementation of the project and outlined their 2022 work plans.
