Market women at Bechem Central Market appeal for renovation and improved sanitation amid collapsing businesses

Market women at Bechem Central Market in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region have appealed to the government to renovate and improve the market structures, citing deplorable conditions that threaten their livelihoods.

During a visit to the central market, traders told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the facility was unsanitary, lacking proper toilets and washrooms.

They expressed concern over leakages from the roofing during rains, poor lighting, and the rising incidents of burglary and petty thefts, all of which have negatively affected their businesses.

Madam Adwoa Amponsah, popularly known as the “tomato queen,” noted that the deteriorating conditions had slowed down buying and selling, directly impacting sales and profits.

Another trader, only identified as Afia, highlighted that perishable goods often rot due to poor storage and market conditions, gradually collapsing the businesses of many women.

The market women called on the Municipal Assembly to renovate the structures, provide toilets and washrooms, and install dustbins and waste containers to improve sanitation and waste management.

They stressed that these improvements were critical to sustaining their livelihoods and ensuring a safer, cleaner market environment.
