Madam Shirley Kyei, Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South, has voiced concern over several abandoned road projects in her constituency and the wider Ashanti Region. Speaking at a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sitting, she urged the Department of Urban Roads to provide clear timelines for their completion.
Citing the Auditor-General’s report, Madam Kyei revealed that the Department of Urban Roads in Kumasi had spent over GH¢62 million on various projects, many of which had been left unattended for between 48 and 56 months. She singled out the Maakro/Agogo road project, which she said had been abandoned for an unacceptably long time, causing significant inconvenience to residents and road users.

Responding to the concerns, officials from the Department of Urban Roads explained that many of the stalled projects had suffered setbacks due to delayed payments to contractors. They noted that the prolonged delays had made the identified projects “more expensive” to complete, prompting recommendations for some contracts to be terminated and re-awarded.
The officials assured the Committee that repackaged contracts were expected to proceed “by the end of the year,” provided funds were made available.
Madam Kyei, however, insisted that funds for the projects already existed and urged the Roads Ministry to prioritise their completion. She stressed that the abandonment of projects was undermining public confidence and called for urgent action to restore progress on critical road networks in the Ashanti Region.
