Physical confrontation between Majority and Minority MPs halts parliamentary proceedings during labour ministry budget motion

A parliamentary session considering a financial allocation for the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment was abruptly suspended after a physical clash erupted between Majority and Minority MPs in the chamber.

The disruption began when Minority members left their seats and moved toward the centre of the floor in what was described as a deliberate attempt to obstruct proceedings.

Their action triggered an immediate response from the Majority side, whose members rose to push them back in an effort to restore order and allow the debate to continue.

The confrontation quickly escalated into a chaotic scene of pushing, pulling and shouting, described as a “scaffold” breaking out on the floor of Parliament.

The altercation unfolded just after a member had risen to second a motion supporting the committee’s report on a proposed allocation of “sun million 143 498” for the ministry for the year ending 21 December 2026.

Parliamentary Marshals were present but appeared unable to intervene effectively in the early moments of the clash, standing by as both sides tangled in the centre of the chamber.

It remained unclear how and when order would be fully restored.

The incident underscores rising tensions surrounding key budget considerations and highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain decorum during high-stakes legislative debates.
