MoFA to recruit 400 extension agents and enrol 10,000 youth under agripreneur track to strengthen Feed Ghana Programme

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) is set to recruit 400 Agricultural Extension Agents (AEAs) nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Feed Ghana Programme.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Eric Opoku, during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday.

He said the Ministry was simultaneously enrolling 10,000 young people under a four-year National Service Agripreneur Track, with a portion of each cohort expected to be retained permanently to support agricultural extension delivery.

According to him, Ghana’s extension officer-to-farmer ratio remains significantly below global standards, making the recruitment drive essential. “Our extension officer-to-farmer ratio is far below standard, and this programme will help close that gap,” he said.

“By investing in frontline services, we are cementing the foundation for modern, climate-smart agriculture.”

To improve field operations, the Ministry has procured 540 motorbikes for AEAs, with 150 already distributed across districts.

Mr Opoku explained that the Feed Ghana Programme has now evolved into a national movement, involving state institutions, schools and faith-based organisations in both institutional and community farming.

The Programme’s interventions span irrigation expansion, home gardening, mechanisation support, cooperative development and value chain strengthening.

On irrigation, the Minister reported the construction of 10 new dams, rehabilitation of eight others and installation of 250 solar-powered boreholes across northern regions and parts of Bono and Ahafo.

He added that 50 Farmers‘ Service Centres are being established and equipped with more than 4,000 machines to support land preparation, harvesting, storage and market linkage.

Providing updates on poultry sector reforms, Mr Opoku highlighted progress under the Nkoko Nkitinkiti backyard poultry initiative, the Poultry Intensification Programme and support schemes for anchor farmers producing millions of birds.
