President Mahama Commissions 300-Capacity Damongo Camp Prison Built by The Church of Pentecost

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the Damongo Camp Prison, a modern 300-bed correctional facility constructed and donated by The Church of Pentecost to support Ghana’s prisons infrastructure and rehabilitation agenda.

The Damongo facility is the third to be completed under the Church’s five-camp-prison commitment, following earlier projects at Ejura and Nsawam. It is also the first-ever correctional centre in Damongo, capital of the Savannah Region, making it a historic addition to national security and social reintegration efforts.

In his remarks, President Mahama expressed deep appreciation to Apostle Dr Eric Nyamekye, the Church’s Chairman, and the entire Church of Pentecost community for their extraordinary investment in national development. He highlighted that the prisons project embodies Nelson Mandela’s famous principle that “a society’s greatness is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens.”

He noted that the Damongo Camp Prison stands as a shining example of what becomes possible when government, faith-based institutions, and communities unite in service of national progress. To strengthen operations, the President also announced that the government will supply a 66-seater bus for staff transportation.

Minister for the Interior Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka described the facility as a “beacon of hope” and a demonstration of the powerful partnership between the state and religious institutions.

Apostle Dr Nyamekye reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to national transformation, stressing that the camp prisons project is a “kingdom initiative” aimed not only at spiritual renewal but also at social restoration and the dignified rehabilitation of inmates.

Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, lauded the Church for fulfilling its pledge, noting that the project reflects a ministry that goes beyond spiritual care to improving physical and social well-being.

In a speech delivered on his behalf, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I called for deeper religious tolerance as Ghana continues to strengthen peace, unity, and shared purpose.
