Black Stars face criticism in Keta after 1-1 draw with Chad in 2026 World Cup qualifier

Some football fans in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have expressed disappointment with the Black Stars following their 1-1 draw against Chad in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Ghana took an early lead in the seventh minute through Jordan Ayew, assisted by Mohammed Kudus, but Chad equalised in the closing stages of the game, leaving fans frustrated.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) Sports, Mr. Richmond Masevivi, a sports journalist, blamed Coach Otto Addo for poor tactics and questionable player selections, including leaving experienced midfielder Thomas Partey on the bench. He argued that the team failed to press harder after scoring and called for the coach to resign or be dismissed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to safeguard Ghana’s qualification hopes.

“The 1-1 draw against Chad has raised questions about the team’s strategy and player selection,” he said, adding that the setback highlighted tactical weaknesses and inconsistency under Coach Addo.

While some fans believe the Black Stars still have a chance to qualify if they regroup and win their remaining games, others warned that continuing with the current performance style could lead to embarrassment on the world stage.

Despite the criticism, the Black Stars currently top Group I with 16 points after the seventh round of matches, followed by Madagascar with 13, Mali and Comoros with 12 each, while Central African Republic and Chad trail with 5 and 1 points respectively.

The team will next host Mali on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium in what is seen as a decisive fixture for qualification.

Coach Addo admitted his disappointment with the team’s underperformance but remained optimistic about their chances. “We have to think about Mali, we have to forget about this game,” he said, also pointing to the poor condition of the Chadian pitch, which he described as “hard as concrete,” as a factor in the result.
