Some residents of the Keta Municipality in the Volta Region have expressed deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for establishing a support fund for the families of victims of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash.

The initiative is designed to provide comprehensive care for the children of the deceased, covering education from primary through tertiary or technical training, healthcare, welfare, and essential living expenses. According to residents, the move represents both compassion and responsibility in supporting vulnerable families.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Stella Dzimedi of Tetevikope described the fund as a lifeline that would ensure the children’s education and stability. She said it also includes medical insurance, specialised care, shelter, food, and clothing. She commended Stanbic Bank for partnering with the presidency and contributing GH₵500,000 to kickstart the initiative, describing it as a strong show of corporate social responsibility.

Another resident, Mr. Kwame Tsey, said President Mahama had pledged to sustain the fund long-term, with annual public reports to ensure accountability. The president also promised to open channels for contributions from citizens, corporate organisations, professional associations, and international partners.

Many residents believe the initiative not only eases the financial burden on the bereaved families but also serves as a mark of respect, solidarity, and national unity. Information gathered by GNA indicates that the fund has already accrued over GH₵2 million from various institutions, with further contributions expected from philanthropists and companies.

The tragic helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, including Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC and former Ashanti Regional Minister; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Engineer.

President Mahama reaffirmed that his office would ensure the children’s support fund is preserved and sustainably managed, offering a transparent account of its utilisation every year.
