EC under pressure as contract workers demand unpaid election wages

The Electoral Commission (EC) is facing growing pressure from contract workers in the Greater Accra Region who claim they have not been paid for their services during the 2024 general elections.

The affected workers, who were engaged in December 2024 to assist with the electoral process, say they were promised GHC600 each but have yet to receive their wages despite repeated attempts to follow up with the EC.

Expressing frustration over the delay, one of the workers, who spoke to Citi News on March 7 under anonymity, questioned why the commission had failed to honour its obligation.

“I texted some of the officials, but there was no reply. They said the payment would come, but it didn’t. Others also followed up, yet nothing happened. You cannot hire someone, let them work for you, and then not pay them while you sit comfortably,” the worker stated.

Many of the affected workers served as presiding officers, verification officers, name list reference officers, and ballot issuers during the elections.

With no official response from the EC, concerns are mounting over whether the issue will be resolved anytime soon. The workers are calling on the commission to act swiftly and ensure that all outstanding payments are settled.
