The Government of Ghana has declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GHS20 million to support Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In a press statement issued on August 26, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had become aware of media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana was preparing to make the donation.

According to the Ministry, the reports attributed the announcement of the intended GHS20 million donation to an interview granted by MTN Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson.
The Government commended MTN for the offer but said it was unable to accept it.
The Ministry explained that the Mahama Administration had made adequate provision for the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of Ghanaians affected by the attacks.
It said the Government’s position had earlier been directly communicated to the MTN Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer when they called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), on August 14, 2026.
The Government said it remains fully committed to providing humanitarian evacuation and reintegration financial support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way.
The Ministry also assured the public that it would present a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuations after the exercise had been concluded, in the interest of transparency and accountability.
It added that the Government would continue to create the best business ecosystem for all international brands operating in Ghana to succeed, irrespective of the country from which their businesses originated.
“The welfare of all Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” the statement said.
