TUC inaugurates National Association of Registered Midwives as affiliate

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has inaugurated the National Association of Registered Midwives, Ghana (NARM-Ghana), as its newest affiliate.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, the Secretary-General of the TUC, Dr Yaw Baah, welcomed the association and described its decision to join the congress as a significant step that would strengthen and protect its interests.

Dr Baah said the TUC is a well-structured organisation with a vision of becoming the leading trade union body in Africa and one of the best in the world.

He noted that by joining the TUC, NARM-Ghana would benefit from the collective strength of the organisation in promoting the welfare and independence of its members.

“It is difficult for a lone tree to withstand a storm, but a forest can. By joining a formidable family like the TUC, you are likely to become stronger,” he said.

Dr Baah urged the association to familiarise itself with the TUC Constitution, particularly provisions relating to members’ rights, responsibilities and organisational neutrality.

He reminded members that the constitution prohibits affiliate leaders from holding positions in political parties, addressing political rallies or contesting political office while serving in union leadership.

According to him, violations of these provisions could result in suspension or other sanctions by the TUC General Council.

President of NARM-Ghana, Mary Ofosu, said the association would study and adhere to the TUC Constitution while relying on the congress for support in addressing challenges facing registered midwives.

She also pledged the association’s commitment to contributing to the achievement of the TUC’s vision.

The Trades Union Congress, established in 1945 with 14 unions and about 6,030 members, has grown into one of Ghana’s largest labour organisations, with a membership of more than 500,000.
