Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

The redeveloped Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has attracted large numbers of Ghanaians and international visitors eager to experience the upgraded national monument and learn more about the life of Ghana’s first President.

Over the weekend and on Monday, long queues formed at the park as visitors toured the renovated facility and explored its new exhibitions.

Among the historical artefacts on display are the metallic casket that transported Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s body from Guinea to Ghana, his student mattress, mirror, presidential desk, official pen, stamp, walking stick, and the state car he used during his presidency.

Many visitors praised the redevelopment, describing it as an important investment in preserving Ghana’s history and educating younger generations about the country’s independence struggle and Dr Nkrumah’s legacy.

Some visitors said the refurbished park offered them the opportunity to see personal belongings of Ghana’s first President for the first time, while others spent time exploring the museum’s “Cold Room,” which chronicles Dr Nkrumah’s life and achievements.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is dedicated to the memory of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and serves as the final resting place of both the former President and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah.

Located on the former British colonial Polo Grounds in Accra—where Dr Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957—the memorial has become one of the country’s leading tourist attractions.

Since its establishment in 1992, the park has welcomed nearly 98,000 visitors annually and remains one of the 10 most visited tourist sites in Ghana.
