Viral video of alleged police misconduct at Afrancho/Akomadan station triggers investigation

A viral video showing an alleged confrontation involving a female police officer at the Afrancho/Akomadan District Police Station in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has sparked public outrage and prompted an official investigation by the Ashanti North Regional Police Command.

The incident is reported to have occurred on or around July 3, 2026, when a complainant allegedly visited the station to report a stabbing incident. According to accounts shared alongside the video, the complainant began recording his interaction after he felt his complaint was not being attended to promptly.

In the footage, the policewoman is seen confronting the complainant and demanding that he stop recording. The video further shows her allegedly kicking the complainant’s phone out of his hand and later picking up a stone during the confrontation.

The video, which has circulated widely on social media, has generated strong reactions from the public, with many describing the officer’s conduct as unprofessional.

In response, the Ashanti North Regional Police Command issued a press statement on July 5, 2026, confirming that the officer involved had been identified and that investigations had commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The statement, signed by Acting Public Affairs Officer ASP Emmanuel Agbodzi, said appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to professionalism, discipline and accountability, while assuring the public that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.

The case has reignited public debate over police conduct, citizens’ rights to record public officials during official duties, and broader concerns about accountability and trust in law enforcement.

Police authorities have urged calm as the investigation continues.
