The Government of Ghana has officially launched the country’s electronic visa (e-visa) portal as part of efforts to modernise visa processing, strengthen border management and improve Ghana’s attractiveness as a destination for tourism, business and investment.
The e-visa platform was launched by President John Dramani Mahama on Sunday, May 25, 2026, during an event held in Accra to coincide with the celebration of African Union Day.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new system is expected to replace manual visa procedures with a secure technology-driven online platform aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and travel convenience.
A major highlight of the launch was President Mahama’s announcement that holders of African passports will no longer be required to pay visa fees when travelling to Ghana.
The President described the initiative as more than a technological upgrade, stating that it reflects Ghana’s commitment to innovation, connectivity, good governance and efficient public service delivery.
He explained that the waiver of visa fees for African travellers aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision on the free movement of people across the continent and supports broader continental integration efforts.
President Mahama also noted that the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the free movement agenda are interconnected and essential to driving economic growth and regional cooperation in Africa.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the launch of the e-visa platform demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to opening its borders to tourism, trade and investment while maintaining strong security standards.
According to him, the platform incorporates enhanced security systems that meet international standards to ensure that national security is not compromised.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, also stated that efficient digital systems are becoming increasingly important in attracting global partnerships, investment and tourism.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, said the integration of the e-visa platform with Ghana’s passenger information systems would improve border control, passenger screening and overall travel experience.
The launch event was attended by government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of security agencies, aviation stakeholders and tourism industry players.
Jamaica‘s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, who attended the event, commended Ghana for promoting African unity and strengthening ties between Africa and the Caribbean.
The Government says the e-visa system is expected to simplify travel procedures, reduce processing delays and position Ghana as a more accessible destination within Africa and beyond.
