Trade minister reverses sachet water price increase

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has been commended for her role in reversing a planned increase in sachet water prices, keeping prices unchanged for consumers nationwide.

The outcome follows a crunch meeting held at the Ministry of Trade in Accra, involving key stakeholders, including the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association and the National Association of Sachet Water and Packaged Water Producers.

NASPAWAP had earlier announced a price increase, but after the Minister’s intervention, parties agreed to revert to previous prices, a move expected to bring relief to millions of Ghanaians who depend on sachet water.

President of NASPAWAP, Magnus Nunoo, described the outcome as “historic” and commended President John Dramani Mahama for appointing the Minister, stating that her leadership was timely.

President of the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, Ebo Botwe, said sachet water remains essential for nearly 37 million Ghanaians and noted that the association agreed to absorb the impact of global price fluctuations to maintain stable local prices.

The Minister acknowledged the cooperation of both associations, particularly Mr Botwe, and said recent economic stability has enabled industries to cushion consumers.

She stated that gains made over the past 14 months are now being passed on to Ghanaians and reaffirmed government’s commitment under President Mahama to create an enabling environment for businesses.

She also commended the Polimes Group for supporting the decision.

The Minister reiterated that sachet water prices for sellers, retailers and wholesalers remain unchanged.

The meeting included representatives from agencies such as the Ghana Standards Authority and the Ghana Revenue Authority, and addressed both pricing concerns and the broader state of the sachet water industry.
