The Volta River Authority (VRA) has initiated controlled spillage at the Akosombo and Kpong Dams in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions respectively to mitigate the impact of heavy rains on the dams.
The exercise commenced on Friday, September 15, 2023, according to a statement released by the Corporate Affairs and External Relations Unit of the VRA.
In the statement, Mr. Edward Obeng Kenzo, Deputy Chief Executive of VRA, explained the reason behind the decision, stating, “The decision to spill follows the observed consistent rise in the lake level due to high inflows.”
This decision aims to manage the increasing water levels caused by the heavy rains and reduce the potential risks associated with flooding.
Acknowledging the ongoing heavy rains across the country, Mr. Kenzo emphasized the Authority's commitment to mitigating any adverse impacts. He noted that these rains have led to localized flooding and high water levels in some communities, necessitating controlled spillage.
The VRA assures the public that it will closely monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. This proactive measure aims to safeguard the stability and integrity of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams and minimize any potential risks to surrounding areas during this period of heightened rainfall.
