Mr. Julius Odoi Amesimeku, Country Manager of the Volta Revival Foundation, discloses that the NGO rescued 15 trafficked children engaged in child labour activities at Yeji and Akosombo in 2023. Operating primarily in Ada, Greater Accra Region, the Foundation discovered that children from Ada-Foah, Wekumagbe, Azizanya, and Totimekorpey in Ada-East and West districts were exploited in fishing and animal herding.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Amesimeku revealed that the Foundation successfully reunited the rescued children with their families and facilitated their immediate return to school. The Foundation's overarching goal is to eradicate all forms of child abuse in the region.
Supported by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Foundation has rescued, rehabilitated, and reintegrated approximately 55 children in the same districts. Notably, certain communities in Ada have been identified by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection as hubs for child trafficking to the Volta Lake for fishing.
Mr. Amesimeku urges the government to establish robust child protection measures, involving communities and families, to safeguard children from exploitation and trafficking.
