The Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region were marred by violence after unidentified individuals stormed the election centre, disrupting the ballot sorting and counting process.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers overturned tables, destroyed ballot boxes, and scattered voting materials, forcing Electoral Commission (EC) officials to halt proceedings. Security personnel on-site struggled to control the situation, prompting a temporary suspension of the election.
The unrest is believed to have stemmed from the unexpected defeat of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was widely seen as a frontrunner. Some supporters, reportedly unhappy with the outcome, allegedly instigated the chaos, demanding a review of the results.
In response, additional law enforcement officers have been deployed to restore order and secure electoral materials. The EC has yet to issue an official statement on the incident or indicate the next steps regarding the election outcome.
