EKMA educates students on teenage pregnancy and reproductive health

The Department of Community Development and Social Welfare of the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) recently organized a sensitization program aimed at educating students within the municipality on issues related to teenage pregnancy and illegal abortions.

Madam Alimatu Sadia Abubakari, a Senior Social Welfare and Community Development Officer of EKMA, led the session, focusing on the sociocultural and economic effects of early pregnancy, particularly on the girl child. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing education to become responsible contributors to family life later on.

Highlighting the concerning trend of teenage pregnancy in areas like Kwesimintsim and Apremdo within the municipality, Madam Abubakari underscored the need for proactive measures to address this growing issue.

Mr. John Afful, an officer from Marie Stopes International, further engaged the students on the detrimental effects of teenage pregnancy. He outlined various health risks associated with early pregnancies, including obstetric fistula, giving birth to underweight babies, stillbirths, school dropouts, and the increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Mr. Afful emphasized the importance of abstaining from sexually related activities to avoid these risks and encouraged students to prioritize their reproductive health. He urged them to seek medical attention for any suspected health issues promptly.

In closing, the students were reminded of the importance of abstaining from premarital sex to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the subsequent need for illegal abortions. The session aimed to empower students with knowledge and awareness to make informed decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health.
