Russia-Ukraine conflicts Ghana government evacuates 460 Ghanaian students from Ukraine: Ghana News

The Minister of , Ms , announced that the Ghanaian government has successfully evacuated 460 students from amidst the escalating security situation in the country.

Ms Botchwey revealed that out of the total evacuated students, 220 are expected to arrive in Ghana today, Monday, February 28. She provided details during a media engagement on Sunday in , emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens abroad.

She stated, “I am pleased to inform you that 220 of our compatriots have exited and should be with us in Ghana soon. We are earnestly facilitating the safe return of a lot more.”

The Minister acknowledged the challenges in evacuating students from certain areas, particularly Kharkov, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk, due to security concerns. Despite most students traveling to Ukraine independently, Ms Botchwey reiterated the government's responsibility for their safety.

She emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, urging dialogue between and other parties involved. Addressing reports of violence, including allegations of a bus carrying Ghanaians being shot at, she urged the media to refrain from sensationalism and unconfirmed reports.

Ms Botchwey's remarks came in the wake of 's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, which resulted in casualties and widespread destruction. Ukrainian officials reported a significant loss of life and condemned the attack as an attempt to seize territory and undermine their sovereignty.
