Panama has officially declared its support for Morocco's Autonomy Initiative as the “only basis for a just and lasting solution” to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. This endorsement was conveyed in a Joint Declaration following bilateral talks between Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, and Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, the Panamanian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
During the videoconference, Panama emphasized its commitment to determining future actions and positions based on this declaration. The Joint Declaration affirms that Panama sees the United Nations as the appropriate mechanism to bring together all stakeholders, seeking a political solution in line with the resolutions of the Security Council.
Panama underscored the importance of advancing the political process on the international stage, urging serious and respectful consideration of Security Council resolutions to identify points of convergence among the involved parties. The declaration reflects Panama's stance in favour of Morocco's Autonomy Initiative and its dedication to supporting a political resolution to the Sahara dispute through the United Nations.
