The National Media Commission (NMC) has expressed its satisfaction with the swift conviction of members of the New Patriotic Party who attacked United Television (UTV) and disrupted a live program.
The attackers were convicted by a magistrate court in Achimota, Accra, and each fined GH₵2,400 for their actions on October 7, 2023.
In a statement signed by Mr. George Sarpong, the Executive Secretary, and released in Accra, the NMC celebrated the outcome of the case as a significant step in addressing impunity against journalists in the country.
The NMC also commended the Minister of Information for reporting members of his own party to the Police for invading a TV station.
The statement highlighted the positive aspects of the police action, specifically praising the responsiveness and professionalism of the commander of the Tesano Police and his team.
It underscored that the public's outrage indicated the values cherished in the country's democratic space and the level of decency expected from everyone.
The NMC called for a collective commitment to the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of Journalists to create a safer environment for journalism practice in Ghana.
The conclusion of this case was seen as a pivotal first step toward addressing impunity and ensuring a safer space for journalists in the country.
