Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly encourages registration for Persons with Disabilities to access common fund benefits: Ghana News

Mr. Erasmus O. Xerton, Chairperson of the Social Services Sub-Committee at the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, has called on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) nationwide to register with their respective Assemblies to tap into the benefits of the District Assembly's Common Fund (DACF).

Addressing the common fund disbursement ceremony, Mr. Xerton emphasized the importance of PWDs registering to access the allocated two percent of the DACF, specifically earmarked to address the concerns of individuals with disabilities.

He highlighted the potential for this financial support to significantly improve the lives of PWDs within their communities.

“The government-led initiative is aimed at minimizing poverty among all PWDs, particularly those outside the formal sector,” said Mr. Xerton.

The objective is to enhance the social image of PWDs through dignified labor, support income-generating activities, provide educational assistance, and build their capacities.

Mr. Xerton expressed the government's dissatisfaction with PWDs begging on the streets, stating, “These disbursements are to motivate you to identify your areas of interest and passion and set up small businesses of your own to become independent, and not to beg on the streets.”

During the ceremony, 16 beneficiaries received various items, including fridges, sewing machines, grinding machines, hair products, drinks, and wiring cables.

Mr. Justice Amu Kabiri, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude on behalf of all recipients, noting that the items would significantly improve their lives and reduce the burden on the government regarding people with disabilities.

“Disability is not inability, and I believe if we put our minds to it, we will be able to make the best out of our lives as disabled,” said Mr. Kabiri. He encouraged beneficiaries to be determined, and work hard, and expressed hope for more support from the public.

Mr. Xerton advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the items, engage in economic activities, and strive for independence.
