NIB invites Joe Ghartey for questioning over stalled Ghana Sky Train project

Former Minister for Railway Development, Joe Ghartey, has been invited by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for questioning over the controversial Ghana Sky Train project.

Sources indicate that Ghartey, who led the ministry from 2017 to 2021, is being questioned as part of investigations into the feasibility and financial transactions of the $3 billion urban railway project. His invitation follows earlier interrogations of other key officials involved in the initiative.

The Ghana Sky Train project was launched in 2018 as a solution to Accra‘s worsening traffic congestion. In 2019, under Ghartey’s leadership, Ghana signed a concession agreement with Africa Investment (Ai) Sky Train Consortium. However, the project never materialized, raising concerns about its viability and funding.

In 2022, the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) revealed that it had invested $2 million into the project but had seen no returns. This expenditure was flagged in the Auditor-General’s report, fueling public scrutiny and prompting further investigations.

Ghartey, a former Attorney General and ex-Member of Parliament, has not yet commented on his invitation. While it remains unclear whether the probe will lead to legal action, authorities are said to be reviewing financial transactions and decision-making processes related to the project.
