Mr. Takeshi Akahori, Director-General for Global Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, led a delegation to inspect the Kotoka International Airport Laboratory (KIA) in Ghana.
This visit is part of activities to review completed and ongoing projects funded by the Japanese government.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Ambassador Mr. Takashi Akahori emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation between Ghana, Japan, and multinational organizations like the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
He highlighted the significance of international collaboration in enhancing global health preparedness, particularly in response to pandemics such as COVID-19.
Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, underscored the importance of the KIA laboratory in strengthening Ghana's pandemic response and improving public health emergency management.
He highlighted the laboratory's role in early detection and timely care linkage, as well as its contribution to Ghana's overall health system capacity.
The KIA laboratory, funded by the Japanese government, is part of a network of labs established at major entry points in Ghana, including the Aflao, Elubo, and Paga borders.
These labs support early detection and management of COVID-19 and other public health risks, enhancing Ghana's health system resilience.
Mr. Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov, Deputy Resident Representative for the United Nations Development Programme, commended the expansion of the laboratory network.
He emphasized the project's contribution to strengthening Ghana's health system and enhancing community resilience to health challenges.
