Ghana Tourism highlights a recap of 2023 events

The (GTA) wrapped up its “December in GH” festivities in early January 2023.

The month-long celebration showcased Ghana's rich arts and cultural heritage, attracting locals, Africans in the diaspora, and a global audience.

In February, the GTA, in collaboration with Fairafric, marked National Chocolate Day by presenting cocoa-based products to pupils and staff of Dzorwulu Special School in .

The gesture aimed to include special children in the celebration.

In March, the Ghana Hotels Association (GHA) expressed dissatisfaction with the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) over a substantial increase in water tariffs for hotels.

The GHA cited a surge from an announced 8.3% adjustment to a staggering 167% for the first quarter of 2023.

Tourism Consultant and Analyst, Mr Emmanuel Frimpong, urged the government in March to consider granting visa-free entry to tourists.

He emphasized the positive impact on tourism and the potential for increased investments.

May saw the launch of the 2023 Miss Tourism Ghana pageant, dedicated to promoting the country's cultural heritage and tourist destinations.

Simultaneously, the Embassy of Ghana in the USA, in collaboration with the GTA, launched “Ghana Week in DC” to showcase the nation's rich culture.

The National Folklore Board, in partnership with the Association of Ghanaian Unions in Switzerland and the Embassy of Ghana in Switzerland, launched the Ghana Day Festival Highlife Concert and Business Expo 2023 in June.

The event aimed to promote Ghanaian highlife music in Switzerland.

In the same month, the Akwaaba Travel Market, , collaborated with the GTA for the sixth WEIZO West African Travel Expo.

The Expo focused on “Tourism development through digitalization.”

Mrs. Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, CEO of the Ghana Film Authority, advocated for the inclusion of film tourism in Ghana's tourism sector in June. Film tourism could position Ghana as a preferred shooting destination globally.

The African American Association of Ghana marked the Juneteenth festival in July, celebrating African American culture.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park reopened to the public, garnering a positive reception.

The PANAFEST/Emancipation Day Celebrations, organized by the GTA, took place from July 19 to August 1, celebrating African heritage and emancipation.

August witnessed the official launch of the “December in GH” calendar by the GTA, promising a month of culture, entertainment, adventure, and community service.

In September, the GTA launched the 2023 Ghana “Tourism Month,” encouraging citizens to participate in festivals and events.

CEO Akwasi Agyeman reported a 47% growth in domestic tourism over the past two to three years.

Ada, in the Greater Accra Region, hosted the 2023 World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) World Tourism Day in September.

The theme celebrated Ghana's cultural richness. The Eighth Ghana Theatre Festival opened in October, focusing on “Celebrating Ghanaian culture and heritage through partnerships and linkages.”

In November, the final calendar for the “December in GH” events was unveiled, setting the stage for another exciting celebration.

Africa Medical Tourism Council (AMTC) launched in the same month, aiming to organize medical tourism infrastructure in Ghana.

As Ghana concluded 2023, the diverse range of events showcased the country's commitment to promoting tourism, cultural heritage, and international collaborations.

The GTA's initiatives is aimed at enhancing domestic tourism, fostering cultural exchange, and positioning Ghana as a global tourism destination.
