Ecobank Ghana has stepped in to aid three flood-affected communities in the Volta region, presenting donations exceeding GH₵200,000.00 to mitigate the impact of the Akosombo and Kpong dam spillage.
The communities benefiting from the relief efforts are Sopkoe in the South Tongu District, New Bakpa Zorotodzi, and Adidome in the Central Tongu District.
The substantial donation comprises 5,730 bags of sachet water, 675 bags of 5kg rice, and 6 bales of used clothing. Additionally, Ecobank extended support to the district hospitals in the affected areas by providing assorted medications.
Dr D. Kasser Tee, Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager of Ecobank Ghana expressed the bank's empathy for the displaced people, stating, “The bank shares in the pain of the displaced people in the three communities who have had their livelihoods severely affected by the floods.
It is our contribution to efforts made by individuals, other corporate bodies, and the state to help put smiles on the faces of the affected people.”
Dr. Tee assured the affected communities of Ecobank's commitment, stating, “Ecobank has always been a friend of the Volta Region and would go the extra mile to help restore livelihoods by contributing to ensure that normalcy returns to the affected villages.”
He referenced Ecobank's previous involvement in aiding communities, particularly citing the support provided through the Ghana Association of Banks in November 2021 to the people of Keta affected by tidal waves.
Dr. Kasser Tee concluded by addressing the urgent appeal from Torgbe Sakpiti V, chief of New Bakpa, for resettlement away from low-lying areas. He urged other corporate organizations to assist flood victims, especially those whose communities have been entirely swept away.
Expressing gratitude, Gabriel Adzago, District Coordinating Director of the Central Tongu District Assembly, thanked Ecobank for the relief items and assured equitable distribution among the victims.
He dismissed allegations of mismanagement, emphasizing that all received items had been distributed to alleviate the affected persons' difficulties.
Hon. Seth Kwasi Agbi, District Chief Executive of South Tongu District Assembly, commended Ecobank's efforts and appealed for more support from like-minded corporate bodies.
He assured collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure the fair distribution of relief items, emphasizing the judicious use of medications to treat sick individuals in the affected areas.
