March 7, 2024 – Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, John Kumah, has been reported dead at the age of 45 after a brief illness, sources close to the family have confirmed to Citi News.
The late MP is survived by his wife and six children. John Ampontuah Kumah, affectionately known as Lawyer John Kumah, was highly regarded by his constituents in Ejisu, Ashanti Region, as a man of integrity with a focus on job creation and inspiring hope for the future among both young and old.
Before entering politics, he made significant contributions in the business and legal sectors. As the founding Managing Director of Majak Associates Ltd, a building and construction firm, his work left a footprint on construction projects across Ghana. After becoming a lawyer, he founded Aduaprokye Chambers and served as the Managing Partner until his appointment as CEO of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) in 2017.
During his tenure at NEIP, he oversaw the training of 45,000 start-ups in three years under the Presidential Business Support Programme, providing support to 10,000 beneficiaries and contributing to job creation for the youth nationwide.
With over 17 years of continuous working and leadership experience, John Kumah was recognized for his creativity, innovation, and resourcefulness in creating jobs, promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting youth development. In 2018, he was adjudged the Most Efficient, Prominent Government Appointee and, in 2019, was listed among President Akufo-Addo's top 20 Most Humble and Respectful Appointees.
A loyal member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he had been actively involved with the party since 1992, serving as the founding father of the Young Patriots, a youth political activist, and a member of the Communication Team of the NPP.
John Kumah, in fulfillment of promises made to his constituents in Ejisu, played a pivotal role in securing substantial funding for various infrastructure and job creation projects in the constituency. His passing is mourned not only by his family and constituents but also by colleagues, party members, and the nation as a whole.
