The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to confirm changes to the Majority Caucus Leadership in Parliament on Friday, February 23. According to a source from the Ghana News Agency, the lineup is expected to be confirmed without alterations.
In the wake of Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's resignation as Majority Leader, Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Efutu, is poised to take on the role of Majority Leader. Meanwhile, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, the MP for Asokwa, is slated to assume the position of Deputy Majority Leader, with Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, retaining his role as Chief Whip.
Additionally, Mr. Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon, is expected to be appointed as the First Deputy Majority Whip, while Mr. Alex Tettey Djonobuah, MP for Sefwi Akontombra, will reportedly be named the Second Deputy Whip.
Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Ghana's longest-serving lawmaker, formally announced his resignation during a crucial meeting between President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Majority Caucus at the Jubilee House on Wednesday.
Reacting to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu's resignation, Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Bekwai, expressed disappointment, describing the former Majority Leader as a fantastic and hardworking leader. However, he stated that he had no information suggesting that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was forced to resign.
The confirmation of these changes by the NEC signals a significant shift in the leadership dynamics within the NPP's parliamentary caucus and sets the stage for a new phase of legislative activity under the guidance of the revamped leadership team.
