NPP Minority Caucus donates GH¢100,000 to WAFCON Bronze Medalists Black Queens

The Minority Caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament has donated GH¢100,000 to Ghana’s Black Queens in recognition of their bronze medal finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin unveiled the cash donation on the floor of Parliament, drawing applause from fellow MPs and Black Queens players seated in the public gallery. He commended the team, the technical staff, and the Ghana Football Association for their resilience and purpose throughout the tournament.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Asokwa, officially handed over the donation to the team captain on behalf of the Caucus.

The donation followed a warm parliamentary reception for the team on Tuesday, July 29. Legislators praised the Queens’ performance and called for increased investment in women’s football. They stressed that the team deserved tangible rewards and not just symbolic praise.

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, recounted the team’s difficult start, losing their opener to South Africa‘s Banyana Banyana, but highlighted their strong comeback, including enduring two consecutive 120-minute matches and three penalty shootouts to clinch third place.

“This milestone was not achieved through ease,” Hon Kofi Adams said. “The Queens showed discipline, character, and tactical maturity.”

He assured Parliament of government support for the team’s welfare and logistics and urged the private sector to rally behind women’s football in Ghana.
