Maresca backed to lead Manchester City into new era

Manchester City players have thrown their support behind new manager Enzo Maresca, expressing confidence in his tactical approach as the club begins life after Pep Guardiola.

Maresca took charge of City for the first time in Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong, where the Premier League champions lost on penalties.

Defender Josko Gvardiol described the Italian as the right choice for the job, praising his ideas while acknowledging that adapting to a new manager would take time.

“The level is that high and he has been chosen with reason as the manager,” Gvardiol said.

“I think he has quality, has some new ideas and also we need to see the style of play, the football we are going to play and the tactics.”

He added that the players are committed to helping the new coach settle in.

“It’s our job to help him as much as possible and also to listen and adapt as quickly as possible,” he said.

Gvardiol also revealed that he had spoken with Maresca about his injury and his previous role under Guardiola.

Winger Antoine Semenyo also welcomed the appointment, saying Maresca’s attacking philosophy suits his style of play.

According to Semenyo, the Italian’s approach gives wide players greater freedom in one-on-one situations, something he described as “music to my ears.”

He said individual meetings with the manager had focused on his tactical role and how City would play under the new system.

Former Manchester City midfielder Izzy Christiansen also believes the club is entering an exciting new chapter but urged patience as Maresca settles into the role.

She praised the signing of Elliot Anderson, describing the midfielder as an excellent addition who could form a strong partnership with Rodri.

Christiansen also welcomed Phil Foden’s contract extension and expressed confidence that the England international would rediscover his best form under the new manager.

Despite calling for patience, she said Manchester City’s ambition remains unchanged.

“This club is all about winning,” she said.
