The German Football Association (DFB) has appointed Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the men’s national football team, marking the beginning of a new era following Germany‘s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Klopp, 59, has signed a four-year contract and will officially assume his new role on August 15, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany’s shock Round of 32 exit to Paraguay.

His first assignment will be to lead the four-time world champions in the UEFA Nations League before overseeing preparations for UEFA Euro 2028 and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment marks Klopp’s return to frontline coaching after leaving his position as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull.

Widely regarded as one of football’s most accomplished managers, Klopp previously enjoyed successful spells with Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

During his time at Borussia Dortmund, he won two Bundesliga titles before moving to Liverpool, where he ended the club’s 30-year wait for a Premier League title and also guided the Reds to UEFA Champions League glory.

Speaking after signing his contract at the DFB Campus in Frankfurt, Klopp said it was a privilege to lead his country’s national team.

“Few things can bring us Germans together like the national team. It is a great honour to become Germany’s head coach, and I want to help build a team that the country can be proud of,” he said.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said Klopp had been the federation’s preferred candidate throughout the recruitment process.

“Jürgen was our desired solution from the very beginning. He is full of energy and has a real passion for this task,” Neuendorf said.

Klopp will be joined by several familiar members of his backroom staff, including long-time assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders, as well as former Germany international Sven Bender.

Former World Cup-winning defender Per Mertesacker has also been appointed Managing Director for Sport and is expected to assume his role in 2027.

Germany’s decision to appoint Klopp comes as the national team seeks to re-establish itself among the world’s leading football nations after a series of disappointing performances at major international tournaments since winning the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

The DFB will be hoping Klopp’s experience and track record of success can restore confidence and competitiveness ahead of the next cycle of major international competitions.
