Asante Kotoko have been eliminated from the 2022/23 CAF Champions League after losing 3-1 on penalties to Burkina Faso’s Rail Club du Kadiogo in the first preliminary round.
The tie ended 1-1 on aggregate after Kotoko lost the second leg 1-0 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday. The Ghanaian champions had won the first leg by the same scoreline in Benin a week earlier.

Rail Club du Kadiogo took the lead in the 15th minute through Dramane Kambou and maintained the advantage until the end of the match, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Yussif Mubarik converted Kotoko’s opening penalty, but Solomon Sarfo-Taylor, Nicholas Osei Bonsu, and Enoch Morrison all failed to score.
Kadiogo converted three of their penalties to secure a 3-1 victory and advance to the second preliminary round of the competition.
Following their early exit from the CAF Champions League, Asante Kotoko will now shift their focus to the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season.
