Sand winner sentenced to two years for stealing 37 cattle

In an Circuit Court, a 38-year-old sand winner, Ganiu Munkaila, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 37 cattle valued at GH₵37,000. Munkaila pleaded not guilty to charges of abetment of commit crime and stealing. However, after a full trial, he was found guilty of stealing and convicted accordingly.

The prosecution informed the court that the complainant, a businessman and cattle farmer, entrusted his cattle business to the convict, who was a sand winner and supervisor of the complainant's herdsman. The complainant gave GH₵37,000 to the convict to purchase 37 cattle, in addition to the 21 already in his custody. However, the convict failed to bring all the cattle into the complainant's kraal.

The convict was accused of organizing individuals to rob the herdsman of six cattle. In an attempt to cover his involvement, the convict informed the complainant that robbers had taken away 60 cattle, leading to the arrest of cattle herdsmen in the area. The court found Munkaila guilty of stealing the cattle and sentenced him to two years imprisonment with hard labour.
