ECOWAS Court dismisses all 7 claims brought by former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo against Ghana

The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has dismissed all seven claims filed by former Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, against the Republic of Ghana.

According to information released after the ruling, the court found against the applicant on all claims brought before it.

The court also declined to make any award in relation to Justice Torkornoo’s request for US$10 million in damages.

Addressing the damages claim, the court held that: “In light of the Court’s conclusions that Ghana has not violated any of the Applicant’s rights under the African Charter as alleged, the Court makes no decision on reparations.”

The ruling brings to a close the case brought by the former Chief Justice against the Ghanaian state before the regional court.

Following the judgment, government officials commended the legal team that represented Ghana in the proceedings.

Special recognition was given to the State Attorneys who worked on the Republic’s defence, with officials praising their extensive research and preparation throughout the case.

The judgment means the Republic of Ghana has successfully defended all claims brought against it by Justice Torkornoo before the ECOWAS Community Court.
