EC to rerun elections in 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North on July 11

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency following disagreements between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the use of scanned results in the December 7, 2024, general election.

The decision was communicated after a crucial meeting held on Tuesday, July 1, between the EC and representatives of the two major political parties. This meeting followed an earlier engagement on June 12 aimed at resolving the electoral dispute.

At the centre of the impasse is the legitimacy of 37 scanned Pink Sheets, originally used to collate the constituency’s parliamentary results. The NDC maintains that the election must be rerun in all 37 polling stations, arguing that the scanned Pink Sheets were submitted by the NPP and not authenticated by the EC’s own processes. The NPP, however, contends that the results from only three polling stations are outstanding and insists that the existing scanned results, confirmed by both parties’ agents, are sufficient to declare a winner.

The EC clarified that the controversy stems from the destruction of several Pink Sheets at the constituency collation centre by party supporters during the vote count. This made original verification impossible in some cases.

After reviewing the evidence and deliberating extensively, the Commission has decided that a rerun will be held in 19 polling stations where scanned results were not verified by the respective Presiding Officers, even though agents from both parties had endorsed them.

The EC confirmed that in the remaining 18 polling stations, the scanned results were duly verified by the Presiding Officers and approved by the party agents, making a rerun unnecessary in those areas.

The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025. The Electoral Commission has called on the Ghana Police Service to ensure a secure and peaceful environment during the election.

Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency, fairness, and integrity in resolving the matter and conducting the rerun.
