Arrest MPs over vandalism at vetting — Professor Gyampo urges IGP

Political analyst Professor Ransford Gyampo has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo-Dampare, to swiftly arrest Members of Parliament involved in the destruction of state property during a violent confrontation at the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30.

During the ministerial vetting, some lawmakers vandalized microphones and tables in protest against the Majority caucus‘ decision to proceed with the process, despite the Minority’s request for a rescheduling.

In an interview with Accra-based TV3, Prof. Gyampo emphasized that the law must be applied equally, adding that past arrests of MPs and government officials for violating traffic rules set a precedent for holding them accountable in this case.

“It is not possible for people to destroy public property and for us to sweep it under the carpet. We should go to the extent of asking Dampare to arrest those culpable for destroying properties that were procured with taxpayers’ money,” he stated.

Prof. Gyampo also commended the Majority caucus for their tolerance but warned that democracy should not be dictated by a vocal minority.

“You see, democracy is about majority rule. The tolerant posture of the Majority must not be mistaken for a license for minority tyranny, where the Minority dictates how things must be done,” he added.
