The New Patriotic Party (NPP), the ruling party in Ghana, has initiated the process of selecting its flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 general election.
On Friday, May 26, 2023, several hopeful candidates had representatives pick up the nomination forms on their behalf at the NPP's headquarters in Accra.
Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko also had his nomination forms collected by a team led by one of his aides, Benjamin Armah. In an interview with Citi News, Armah expressed his confidence in Agyarko's ability to secure victory in the 2024 elections.
“We are very confident that this is a man God has prepared among all the men in the NPP to succeed our current President Akufo-Addo. We believe that with his capabilities and as we tout him, the engine of public policy in the NPP, he will be able to bring hope to the ordinary Ghanaian,” said Benjamin Armah. He further emphasized Agyarko's extensive regional outreach, stating that he will be among the top contenders for the party's flagbearer position.
Another prominent figure to secure his nomination forms was the former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong.
Additionally, Francis Addai-Nimoh, the former Member of Parliament for Mampong, picked up his forms with his spokesperson, George Obeng Antwi, expressing hope that Addai-Nimoh would become the President of Ghana in 2025.
Speaking about their choice of Addai-Nimoh, Antwi stated, “We are friends of Addai-Nimoh, and we believe that he's the best person to lead us into the next general elections. What we are saying is that if the NPP can win the next general elections, it has to be someone who is not part of this administration.”
The NPP officially opened nominations on May 26, allowing individuals interested in leading the party in the 2024 elections to collect their nomination forms.
The forms can be obtained from the Office of the General Secretary at the Party Headquarters in Asylum Down from Monday to Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. The party has set the deadline for the nomination process as June 26, 2023.
