The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Builsa North Constituency of the Upper East Region has expressed disappointment with Mr. James Agalga, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, for organizing Feok festival games in Accra.
The NPP accuses Agalga of attempting to create disunity and undermine the traditional Feok festival, stating that his actions are a concern within the Builsa community.
In a statement signed by Mr. Derrick Abakisi, the Communications Director for the Constituency, the NPP emphasizes the cultural significance of the Feok festival, providing a platform for cultural expression, community bonding, and economic opportunities for local businesses.
The party questions the motives behind Agalga's initiative, expressing concern about its potential negative impact on the already dwindling participation in the Feok festival.
“It is regrettable that Mr. Agalga, in his capacity as an elected representative, chose to pursue an initiative that may lead to division and reduce participation in the Feok festival,” the statement reads.
The NPP calls on the MP to engage in collaborative efforts that enhance the significance of the Feok festival.
In response, the Builsa North Youth Wing Fun Games Secretariat in Accra issues a counter statement, jointly signed by Mr. Thomas Akayaaniaka Amoak, Organizer, Mr. Kweku Bawah, an Assistant Organizer, and Mr. Abudu Imoro, an Advisor to the Secretariat. The Secretariat dismisses the NPP's claims as “baseless and unsubstantiated.”
The statement clarifies that the games in Accra were initiated by the Builsa Youth to honor the MP for his developmental projects in the Constituency. It was intended to provide an opportunity for youth to showcase their talents in football for scouting by managers and FIFA agents.
The Secretariat insists that the youth approached the MP with the idea, and his support was a response to their call to duty. The statement accuses the NPP of engaging in political maneuvers to achieve political capital and sow seeds of discord between the youth and their MP.
“Incontrovertible evidence showed that the MP has always supported the Feok Football games for the past 12 years, and as a result, no amount of political gymnastics from the NPP will weaken the resolve of the MP to continue to serve and support the Feok games diligently,” the Secretariat concludes.
