The Media Coalition Against Galamsey (MCAG) has expressed frustration over the apparent lack of action from the Police in prosecuting the directors of Akonta Mining Ltd for violating Ghana's mining laws.
In a statement released on Thursday, the coalition revealed that its leadership had held a meeting with senior officials from the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, urging immediate action on the matter.
This meeting was a result of petitions submitted by the MCAG to the Inspector General of Police, calling for the prosecution of the directors of Akonta Mining Limited following accusations of their involvement in illegal mining activities.
According to the statement, the senior CID officials informed the MCAG leadership that investigations into the activities of Akonta Mining Limited were currently underway.
“However, we expressed our frustration regarding the apparent lack of progress in prosecuting the directors of Akonta Mining Ltd, despite the existence of clear evidence (which we included in our petition and statement to the Police) demonstrating their violation of the Minerals & Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703). We fervently appealed for urgent action to expedite the prosecution of the directors of Akonta Mining Ltd,” the statement stated.
The MCAG emphasized its steadfast conviction that there is no justification for the persistence of illegal mining in Ghana and called on the public to actively support the fight against this unlawful practice.
“Failure is not an option in this battle. Irresponsible and unsustainable mining poses a significant threat and must not be tolerated,” the statement concluded.
