Medeama SC, the reigning Ghana Premier League Champions, secured a significant victory by defeating Guinea's Horoya AC 3-1 in the second preliminary round of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.
In a spirited performance, goals from Nana Kofi Babil, Nurudeen Abdulai, and Kofi Asmah secured the win for the ‘Mauve and Yellow,' setting the stage for an eagerly anticipated second leg encounter scheduled for September 29, 2023.
This victory enhances Medeama's prospects of advancing to the group stages of the CAF Champions League—a historic achievement for the club and the first time in 12 years for any Ghanaian club.
The match got off to a challenging start for Coach Evans Adotey's side as they encountered formidable resistance from the Horoya defence during the first half. Medeama had numerous opportunities to take the lead, but the Horoya side proved resilient.
However, in the second half, the ‘Mauve and Yellow' displayed ruthlessness. Kofi Babil opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a spectacular strike from inside the penalty box.
Abdulai added the second for Medeama in the 65th minute with a powerful header from close range, while Asmah sealed the victory with a stunning strike shortly thereafter.
Despite their dominance, Medeama SC could not maintain a clean sheet, as the visitors managed to score a late consolation goal through Mohamed Lamine Fofona.
