Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, has called for a thorough review of Ghana's constitution by any new political administration.
Addressing the grand durbar of the 2023 Asogli Yam Festival, Togbe Afede emphasized the need for constitutional reform, citing an over-concentration of power at the presidency and its adverse impact on the fight against corruption.
Ghana's constitutional review process gained momentum during the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills' administration, resulting in a 900-page report. However, this initiative was shelved after his untimely death.
Togbe Afede expressed his concerns about the current Constitution, stating that it had granted excessive power to the president, which hindered efforts to combat corruption effectively.
He urged the next government, as President Atta Mills had done, to prioritize the review of the Constitution.
The Agbogbomefia also highlighted the weakening of state institutions, including the security services and the judiciary, due to the abuse of constitutional powers.
Togbe Afede reiterated his call for unity among the nation's leaders, emphasizing the importance of eschewing corruption and prioritizing the interests of the people to drive development.
He stressed that unity was essential for Ghana to continue shining as a beacon of peace.
In commemoration of his two decades of reign, Togbe Afede reaffirmed his commitment to bringing development to his community and keeping the state united.
He acknowledged the progress made in Ho and called on stakeholders to address infrastructure challenges, including poor road conditions.
Addressing youth unemployment, Togbe Afede announced plans to establish a “Ghana Aviation Training Academy” in the coming months to address the needs of the aviation sector.
The theme of the festival was “20 Years of Selfless and Inspiring Leadership.” Oseadeayor Agyeman Badu, the Dormaahene, commended Togbe Afede for his outspoken leadership and urged all to hold politicians accountable to ensure equitable resource distribution.
Dignitaries, including political leaders and diplomatic heads, extended their congratulations to Togbe Afede on his anniversary.
The grand durbar marked the culmination of three weeks of festivities, including an anti-corruption day celebration, a summit of Ewe Chiefs from West Africa, and a women's day celebration.
The ban on funerals in the Municipality throughout the period will be lifted in the coming week.
