The Progressive People's Party (PPP) has announced its support for Mr Kwaku Duah, an independent candidate vying for the upcoming by-election in the Kumawu Constituency, Ashanti Region.
During the 2020 parliamentary election, Mr Duah ran as an independent candidate but was unsuccessful.
According to a statement signed by Nana Ofori Owusu, National Chairman of the PPP, Mr Duah is the only credible independent candidate in the forthcoming by-election.
The PPP has called on its members to vote for Mr Duah, emphasizing the need for an independent voice in Parliament.
The statement reads, “The Party believes Ghana needs an independent voice in Parliament to stand on behalf of Ghanaians, and Hon. Kwaku Duah is the only credible, competent, and very good leader since 2020, to lead the people of Kumawu in Parliament.”
The PPP encourages eligible voters and party members in Kumawu to participate in the by-election and support Mr Duah, despite any attempts at intimidation or manipulation.
They urge voters to cast their ballots on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, in favour of Hon. Kwaku Duah for positive change and development in the area.
The PPP also calls on the people of Kumawu to use their votes as a means to “send the right message to the nation” by voting for change.
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the former Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Mr Philip Basoah, in March this year.
In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled the election for May 23, 2023.
Prospective candidates are expected to submit their nominations to the EC from May 2, 2023, to May 5, 2023.
The filing fees for the by-election have been set at GHS10,000 by the Electoral Commission.
