The National Council of the New Patriotic Party has officially confirmed the new leadership of the majority caucus in Parliament, with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu, set to assume the role of Majority Leader starting today, Friday, February 23.
This significant leadership change follows recent parliamentary procedures and aligns with the Speaker's ruling on the selection process, marking a pivotal moment in Ghana's legislative landscape.
The confirmation of the leadership changes occurred at a meeting led by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, and involved deliberations among members of the Majority Caucus. Recommendations from the National Executive Committee (NEC) regarding the leadership reshuffle were considered and approved during this meeting.
The process adheres to parliamentary norms, specifically Order 6 of the Standing Orders of Parliament (2024), as interpreted by Speaker Alban SK Bagbin. The Speaker's interpretation emphasized the importance of both parliamentary caucuses and political parties in the leadership selection process, ensuring a balance between internal party democracy and parliamentary norms.
Following the approval by the National Council, the Speaker of Parliament is expected to officially announce the leadership changes on the floor. This will be preceded by a farewell statement from the outgoing Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, symbolizing the end of his tenure.
In a ceremonial transition, Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, will formally install Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the new Majority Leader. Afenyo-Markin will then deliver his first address in this new role, outlining his vision and commitments.
The newly appointed leadership team for the Majority Front Bench will include Patricia Appiagyei as Deputy Majority Leader, Frank Annoh Dompreh as Majority Chief Whip, and Habib Iddrisu and Alex Tetteh Djornobuah as First and Second Deputy Majority Chief Whips, respectively.
