The investigation into a leaked tape detailing an alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) George Akuffo Dampare continues today, Wednesday, September 13, 2023.
Reports indicate that the two witnesses testifying before the parliamentary ad hoc committee, Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the Minister for National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, are doing so behind closed doors.
Bugri Naabu, the first witness when the probe began, faced the committee on Wednesday, with the national security minister expected to follow. Both individuals were summoned to testify following IGP Dr. Dampare's previous testimony.
It is unclear why the National Security Minister was summoned, but Bugri Naabu, who was heard in the leaked tape with two other police officers, has acknowledged recording the tape.
The controversy arose after two police officers featured in the tape, COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George L. Asare, made allegations against the IGP.
They claimed that the IGP colluded with Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, to create the video and questioned the IGP's leadership style.
In the leaked video, a Police Commissioner identified as Mensah, in conversation with Bugri Naabu, discussed plans to remove IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, expressing concerns that he would be too stringent in the 2024 elections.
The retiring Police Commissioner voiced his belief that the IGP's commitment to fair practices and security during the Assin North by-election indicated that he would not allow any electoral manipulation.
