In Ho, the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has unveiled the Cleanest Region Ranking initiative, aimed at promoting sanitation across Ghana's 16 regions through a competitive ranking system based on cleanliness.
In collaboration with waste management giant Zoomlion, this initiative marks the second phase of a national sanitation campaign initiated in 2021. The regional ranking aims to foster collective responsibility for a healthier and more sustainable environment, with areas evaluated according to waste disposal practices and green initiatives.
Mr. Ato Afful, Managing Director of GCGL, emphasized the importance of restoring sanitation and dignity across regions while stimulating tourism development and economic growth. He highlighted the initiative's goal of making a tangible difference and promoting pride through clean environments.
The assessment process, managed by Zoomlion, will be fair, transparent, and inclusive. Physical assessments by Zoomlion and stakeholders will account for 60% of the score, while public voting via a dedicated short code will contribute the remaining 40%.
Support for the initiative extends beyond Zoomlion, with backing from organizations such as Nerasol, the Environmental Service Providers Association, and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
Ms. Emma Adwoa Appiaa Osei-Dua, Director of Communication and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion, announced the public voting short code and reiterated Zoomlion's commitment to partnering with GCGL to improve sanitation outcomes nationwide.
Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, expressed optimism that the initiative would inspire positive environmental activities across regions. He encouraged widespread participation to maintain cleanliness and quality environmental standards.
The competition, scheduled to run for a year, will assess factors such as waste management innovation, school recycling initiatives, availability of waste bins, and overall hygiene standards, including toilet facilities.
The launch event, chaired by Mama Kuma II, Queenmother of Ho Ahoe, emphasized the importance of women's leadership in ensuring proper sanitation and maintaining Ho's reputation as the “Oxygen City of Ghana.”
With widespread stakeholder participation, including representatives from the Environmental Health Department, security agencies, and traditional leaders, the initiative aims to drive significant improvements in sanitation practices nationwide.
