In a tightly contested primary election held at the Wa Technical Institute, Hajia Humu Awudu emerged victorious over Alhaji Isshaku Tahiru Moomin, the incumbent Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), earning the mandate to represent the Wa Central Constituency in the upcoming 2024 general election.
Out of a total of 1,025 valid votes cast, Hajia Awudu secured 567 votes, while Alhaji Moomin trailed with 441 votes.
The third candidate, Mr Abdul-Nayar Issahaku, a newcomer, managed to garner 17 votes, with one rejected ballot.
Mr Adams Isshaku Thirdman, the returning officer, officially announced the results, declaring Hajia Humu Awudu as the winner.
This marks the second time she has defeated Alhaji Moomin in the primaries, having previously secured a victory with a 42-vote margin in the 2020 primaries.
Expressing gratitude after her triumph, Hajia Awudu thanked the delegates for their continued confidence in her. She extended appreciation to her supporters and party members, emphasizing, “The win is not my victory; it is a victory for the party.”
Looking ahead, she expressed determination, stating, “Insha Alla, I know God is going to do it for us; we are poised this time to save Wa Central, and we are going to do that.”
One of the contenders, Mr Abdul-Nayar Issahaku, gracefully acknowledged Hajia Awudu's victory and pledged his support, stating, “This is democracy, and the majority has spoken; the minority should support her. The important thing for us is to win the seat in 2024.”
In other constituencies, winners emerged as follows: Mr James Saatri Kpir-Faatey in Wa West Constituency, Hajia Aisha Salifu in Jirapa Constituency, Mr Nadi Imoro Sanda in Daffiama-Bussie-Issa Constituency, Mr Jacob Dery in Lawra Constituency, Dr Ewura S. K. Mahama in Wa East Constituency, and Mr Salifu Naliwie Baluwie in Sissala West Constituency.
