The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on February 19, 2025, which left a bystander injured.
In a statement issued on February 20, the GRA assured the public of a thorough probe to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. The authority also expressed sympathy for those affected and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all stakeholders.
According to the GRA, Customs officers at the checkpoint had received intelligence about a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled into Ghana from Togo. When officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the occupants abandoned it and fled.
To prevent their escape, the officers fired warning shots, but a stray bullet reportedly struck a bystander a few meters from the checkpoint. The injured individual was immediately rushed to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where they are responding to treatment.
