Ghana's Vice President, , has announced plans to introduce electric buses and a Tap & Go system for the Metro Mass Transit Limited by the end of the year. This initiative aims to modernize the public transport system in Ghana and integrate it with digital payment solutions.

The Tap & Go system, launched in , is designed to eliminate and revenue losses in public transport operations. Similar to the Oyster Card System used in the , passengers will use a digital card with preloaded cash to pay for fares by tapping the card on a fixed machine installed in the bus. Additionally, a mobile app will offer a virtual card option for payment via mobile phones.

To enhance safety and monitoring, security cameras will be installed in the electric buses, allowing real-time monitoring of activities onboard. The initiative also includes a Manifest System where passengers can register for the card using their GhanaCard and phone number, ensuring transparency and safety.

Other features of the Tap and Go initiative include the ability to purchase tickets from home before boarding the bus and top-up options using accounts. This initiative is expected to revolutionize the public transport system, improve transparency, and elevate the quality of services offered to the public.

The Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiama, hailed the initiative as a game-changer in the public transport sector, ensuring affordable and reliable access to transport services for the commuting public. The Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Ltd, Albert Adu Boahen, highlighted the efficiency and revenue optimization benefits of the Tap & Go system, which will be implemented across all 25 branches of the company by May 31st this year.

Developed by a Ghanaian IT solution developer in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport and the Office of the Vice President, the Tap & Go application can be downloaded and installed from AppStore or playStore, or by dialling 713091#. This initiative marks a significant step towards achieving a cashless society and modernizing public transport services in Ghana.
