Government remains committed to protecting AngloGold Ashanti Mines against illegal activities – Abu Jinapor

The Ghanaian government has pledged to provide necessary protection to , Mine, safeguarding its concessions from illegal activities that pose a threat to their operations.

Mr. Samuel , the Minister of , assured that mining laws would be enforced, emphasizing that “persons are not allowed under any circumstances to invade or attack AngloGold's concession.”

During a media briefing on his working visit to in Obuasi, Minister Jinapor stated that lack of employment could never justify the illegal invasion of Anglogold's concessions. He issued a stern warning, saying, “If you do as these have done, you face the full rigours of the laws. You will be arrested, and prosecuted, and the law will take its course.”

The Minister's visit came after an unfortunate incident last week when illegal invaded 's concession in Obuasi.

Minister Jinapor held meetings with the Municipal and District Security Councils of Obuasi and Obuasi-East, traditional leaders, and the leadership of AngloGold Ashanti, aiming to find a lasting solution to the persistent problem.

Highlighting the significance of the mine to the national economy, Minister Jinapor mentioned that it had been placed under care and maintenance in 2016 due to such issues.

He further stated that the government was collaborating closely with Anglogold Ashanti and other stakeholders to explore alternative livelihood support and employment opportunities through community mining.

Expressing satisfaction with the outcome of the visit, Minister Jinapor assured that the Ministry would follow up and work towards finding sustainable and effective solutions to the problem, preventing the recurrence of such incidents.

Mr. Eric Asubonteng, the Managing Director of Anglogold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, confirmed that a total of 96 unauthorized individuals had been apprehended and handed over to the police in connection with the incident.
